Many times I have expressed the fact that the UK news editors don’t bother to read foreign papers like Die Welt, Le Figaro, NRC (Holland) or even Corrierere della Sera. The BBC only goes through the English newspapers and interview pro and contra politicians talking about Brexit Problems, Fears, Insecurity and the Power of the single market. I read all those foreign newspapers and they sometimes give a different impression of the coherence among the 28 EU members.

Here my translation of the highlights in the Report of Die Welt, Germans most serious and independent newspaper, about Fridays summit. Fri Summit Overview

Brexit-Progress is the only success of the summit”

The bosses of the European governments in Brussels agree on the start of the next negotiation phase. But there is a deep ravine among them when it comes to the Refugees subject in the next Euro-Zone reform.

“There is a respectful applause for Theresa May who leads here country out of the European Union.”

Among the summit participants there are bitter arguments going about the migrants question. Especially the French president Macron was very annoyed about the East-European opposition as he wants to build a European state.

It was Theresa Mays success that the European bosses gave her the green light for the next phase. She received applause during the Thu evening dinner. However everybody is aware that the difficult issues are still to come.

The restart of the Brexit negotiations falls together with the start of the work on the EU reforms. Macron is getting impatient as his biggest partner Angela Merkel has not formed a cabinet yet. Macron urged her to hurry up.

However, the East-European countries did not agree with a Christmas recess; Polen, Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic urge an immediate strengthen of the EU outside borders and abort the system of quotes.

“The idea of quotes does not work “said Slovakian Prime minister Robert Fico! All middle and East European colleagues agree.

“Finally one European dream has come through” stated Donald Tusk. 25 states celebrated the beginning of a new military cooperation PESCO. This should safe money for the national treasurers and make the EU citizens feel more secure. This was the only subject where the Europeans could agree on.

Doesn’t this show that it is not all plain sailing in the EU and that the sudden soft tone from the bulldogs in Brussel is to help Theresa May to fight the opposing colleagues in her own party.

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte called her a “formidable politician” and Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker acknowledged her “big efforts” toward reaching a deal. Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán was effusive in his praise: May was a “wonderful person” and “a tough lady.”

I rest my case. Theo R.
