These events happen in the UK and I am Dutch living in Spain. So it should not consider me. But it p.ss.s me off how a supermarket chain and a so called neutral TV organisation put pressure on the UK population. If Brexit goes the hard way and Brits should have to look after themselves, disaster will hit the UK.
Tesco scaremongers the Brits that the food supply would be in danger and jobs would be lost. A load of bullocks. Which food chain, the Tesco one, bombarding the consumers with imported stuff from all over the world. Relying heavily on the so-called world economy? Eating stuff pushed down our throats by a gang of marketing managers.
If the Brexit sh..t would hit the fan, people could turn to local food and stuff made in the UK. Brittan has the largest self-sufficient successful agriculture industry in Europe; among them the biggest tomato greenhouses. If the Brits would keep the produce for themselves instead of exporting it, there would be enough food. Maybe the Brits would have to change their eating pattern but it could work. England exports milk to France and imports French milk and butter. How crazy is that?
The BBC goes through the country reporting that building sites would not have enough materials or foreign workers. That Dover port would not be able to handle the number of lorries coming in. Ever heard of barcodes? They would show which goods are inside the vehicles. Again, buy stuff produced in the country than there would be less heavy traffic.
Anyhow, there are already companies in Holland and Germany (BMW) that run since 2 years a double system, pre- and after Brexit.
However, on the other side, the BBC is broadcasting a program “10 Years Turmoil in the EU” which shows that the EU is not democratic at all and that single countries can block decisions.
And about the Irish border? Irland has an EU border. Northern Irland is not even in Schengen, so there has to be a border. Again, lorries could have barcodes for easy customs handling.
But I am sure that in case of a Hard=Brexit, the countries will be queing up to make special arrangements with the UK. Spain has already announced to protect British Expats and keep them in the country.
Yes, I have easy talking; I moved myself to Andalusia. I picked a location where I don’t need a car and our weekly shopping bill is 80% fruit and veg. All locally grown. Affordable food and the local supermarkets are moving more and more to Bio/Organic food, also grown in the area. The Spanish producers make German sausages and other foreign type food which makes them independent. What I cook with it you can find on my food blogs on WordPress.
The Spanish are proud of “Made in Spain”; the only Chinese big brand copies are sold by the black boys (I know, racism) from Africa that try to make a living. To support them I, I buy a watch from them now-and-then. We get our oranges straight from a farm in Sevilla who brings them to my doorway, 100 kms away. So self-sufficient is not impossible when it comes to food and even to cloth.
There are people on this planet that show us how.. In an earlier blog I mentioned that I watched Nepalese country side kids, making a living. They don’t have any of our problems. They run their lives without consumer pressure, just to live with stuff they find in their environment. The German philosopher Philipp Blom said that they have the perfect format to run society.
A Typical Kids Day In A Nepalese Village
5am – Get up
6am – take animals out to fields and collect water
8am – eat breakfast
9am – walk for an hour to school
10am – start school
3pm – finish school and walk home
4pm – out to fields to start work
7pm – back for dinner
8pm – into bed
I am sure that Nepalese or Spanish people could not be easily blackmailed by a supermarket chain and rely on their local markets.
