Beside the political side of nuclear issues, there is the historical and scientific truth about the development of Plutonium bombs in the 3rd Reich.
The Germans were far ahead in developing new technologies. A simple example: The Germans had developed Television far before the Americans had a box. They were using TV during the 1936 Olympics. Plastic was developed in Germany under the name of Bakelite, Polystyrene, Plexiglas or Polyethylene. The U.S. only got this going in the 50ties. But this was only the innocent stuff.
The polish journalist Igor Witowski described German wartime research as the “greatest technological leap in the history of our civilisation.” The Germans 1st researched about Gravity. Very important for their Airline industry. The V1 and V2 rockets and the Messerschmidt-262 enjoyed the results.
Jewish scientists worked on Quantum Mechanics. The first steps to nuclear technology. These were from day 1 SS projects of highest secrecy.
Though in spite of the SS suprematy, in October 1944 the Oberkommando of the Wehrmacht presented the testing of a “disintegration bomb”. An atom-Splitting device. Secret papers showed that the Nazis had the bombs but no way to transport them. Only by ship.
Although Himmler was the SS boss, in the end it was the unknown Dr. Engineer Hans Kammler who was in command of the massive scientific department. He made sure that all nuclear research units were spread and hidden all over the country. That’s why the bombing of Peenemunde by the allied air-force in 1944 was a total failure. Prototypes and enriched uranium was already moved to other locations. One was an old polish mine in Wenzeslaus on the Tschech border. Kammler transferred it into a hi-tech nuclear testing centre.
The SS also had already digital computers to make calculations. Developed by Dr. Konrad Zuse. The Zuse-built Z-3 computer was used to plot the course of ballistic attacks with the V1 and V2 on London. The Americans were only able to copy this technology in the 50ties.
From 1944 on the U.S. was running the Manhattan Project. Trying to make the “Little Boy” to be dropped on Nagasaki, But the suppliers could not produce enough enriched Uranium to make the bomb strong enough to nuke Japanese cities.
But luck for the Manhattan boys was floating in the Atlantic. In March 1945 there were still U-boats crossing the Atlantic and Pacific. One of them was the U-234, on its way to Japan hiding at the North East coast of the USA . In May 45, 6 days after the Germans surrendered, it was intercepted by the U.S. Navy and taken to South Portland.
On board were high-level German officials, 2 Japanese officers, 2 dismantled ME-262 Jet fighters and 560kg of highly enriched Uranium Oxide. Packed in gold containers. And after the war it became public that also 2 German ready-made Atomic Bombs were among the cargo. The Japanese officers committed suicide when they heard the U-boat was handed over to the Americans.
The German Uranium from U-234 speeded up the Manhattan project and bombs were dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima in Aug 1945.
But there are Air-force pilots suspecting that the Manhattan boys removed the Swastikas from the fins of the 2 ready-made Nazi bombs collected from the U-234 and painted the Stars-and-Stripes on it. Than handed them over to the Airforce. End station Japan. No proof of that.
Most of the Nazi Nuclear Experts were brought to the USA and became American Citizens.
It still a miracle that Hitler did not develop a transport system for his atomic bombs. It would have changed the outcome of WWII. I think Adolf was satisfied to have EUROPE and peace with England and the US. This was the subject of the 1942 meeting from Rudolf Hess with the Royal Family and ex-SSer Prince Bernhard from the Netherlands.
Luckily Churchill had other ideas.
Also strange that Hitler did not finish off the English army at Dunkirk and took many crucial wrong decisions against the vision of his generals. On D-Day he kept his reserves near the Pas de Calais although the German command told him that the Allies were landing in Normandy.
The whole history behind the technology development in the 3rd Reich is so complex that I was unable to condens it and make everything understandable. A lot I did not understand myself. There were 1000ends of Nazi physicians and SS commanders involved. A lot of them got jobs in the USA after the war.
So as far as I can see, it will stay by threats from the UDSSR and Biden. In the end Trump and Putin will solve this with a bottle of Vodka.
PS: I know now why Elon Musk named his electric cars TESLA. The U.S. electric engeneer Nicola Tesla discovered in 1888 the rotating magnetic field. Which led to Alternating-Currant (AC) electric transmission. Tesla forsaw limitless free energy by simply tapping into the Earth magnetic energy field. Too complicated for me.
